Vietnam film faced plywood: origin, phenolic face, formwork

Vietnam film faced plywood is plantation-grown phenolic-film formwork plywood pressed in Vietnam. Atlas guide: origin, mill vs trader, face vs glue.

Direct answer: Vietnam film faced plywood is plywood pressed in Vietnam with a resin-impregnated film (phenolic paper film) on one or both faces, usually on plantation-grown cores. The use is concrete formwork / shuttering — walls, slabs, and columns. Crews pour against that film and strip it. Origin follows the plant that pressed the sheet, not the letterhead on the offer.

Film faced plywood, as a generic class, is that same resin-impregnated overlay construction wherever it is made. Most export formwork sheets use a phenolic face. "Phenolic plywood" is looser: it can mean the film face, or a phenolic glue line with no film. Formwork / shuttering is the pour job. The overlay sheet is one part of that job. Name the layer before you compare offers.

This page is a Vietnam Plywood Atlas educational guide on vietnamplywood.com. Vinawood authors the series with a transparent mill affiliation. The mill's official North American distribution partner operates separately; there is no common ownership.

What is Vietnam film faced plywood?

Vietnam film faced plywood is a pressed plywood core made in Vietnam, with a resin-impregnated film (phenolic paper film) hot-pressed onto the face. The dark sheet releases from cured concrete. It takes abrasion better than raw veneer. Buyers also type FFP, film-faced formply, shuttering plywood, and phenolic faced plywood. Those labels point at the overlay idea. They do not fix bond class, film weight, or who owns the press.

Cores are plantation-grown. Acacia and eucalyptus are the usual species. Hevea and Styrax show up on some programmes. The wood is not cut from natural forest. FAO's Viet Nam forest assessment treats planted forest as the domestic wood base behind processing.

A film-faced sheet is a pressed core plus a phenolic overlay. Origin follows that plant, not the letterhead.

This atlas lists film-faced as one family on the grades and applications map. It does not reprint mill sizes, prices, or SKU tables. For what "Vietnam plywood" means as an origin claim, see what is Vietnam plywood.

What is film faced plywood?

A film-faced panel is a pressed plywood core with a resin-impregnated film (phenolic paper film) on the face. On quality formwork / shuttering export, that film is almost always phenolic (phenol-formaldehyde). The class is global. Vietnam-origin sheets are one origin inside that class.

If an RFQ only says "film faced," write the origin, the bond class, and whose legal name sits on the packing list. The face name alone does not settle those points.

Phenolic face vs phenolic glue vs formwork

Three claims get bundled under one word. Separate them on the purchase order.

Phenolic film face. The resin-impregnated overlay. This is what "film faced" names. Crews pour against it.

Phenolic glue line. Phenol-formaldehyde adhesive between the veneers. The bond is weather-and-boil-proof (WBP) in most export programmes. Faces can be raw or sanded. They can also carry an overlay that is not phenolic film. A WBP sheet with no film is phenolic in the glue, not on the face.

Formwork / shuttering job. The temporary mould for wet concrete. Overlay plywood is the skin. Steel or aluminum gangs are a different product class. Do not mix those RFQs.

Some US papers add Phenolic Surface Film plywood, or Phenolic Film Faced Plyform (PFF), as a named overlay product. That is a defined construction in the Commerce notice. It is not a synonym for every brown sheet. Scope language sits later on this page.

If an offer says "phenolic plywood" and nothing else, ask which layer they mean. Then write the bond class on the purchase order.

What sits under the film?

Most Vietnam export formwork uses a phenol-formaldehyde face film on a weather-and-boil-proof glue line. WBP is a bond-durability class. It is not a waterproof panel. Unsealed edges still take water. Veneers still swell if you leave them open.

EN 314-2 sets three bond classes by end use. Class 1 is dry interior. Class 2 is humid or protected exterior. Class 3 is the exterior boil regime. A seller who writes "waterproof" is selling a slogan. Write the bond class.

Melamine is three different things on a data sheet. Name the layer.

  • Core resin. Melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) is a glue-line chemistry. It is not the face film. MUF formwork panels are not interior-only.
  • Face film. A melamine-impregnated overlay can be pressed on as an industrial face. That is not phenolic film-faced formwork.
  • Decorative laminate. Furniture supply uses the word for a patterned paper face.

Consply is a commercial Bintangor face. It is not film-faced. Buyers who type "MDO" when they want a matte forming face should ask for the named product MatteFace Plywood (MTF), or for a phenolic film programme. MDO is a search term on this atlas. It is not a Vinawood product name. P-Form is polypropylene. It is not Pro Form.

What is Vietnam film faced plywood used for?

Concrete formwork / shuttering. Walls and slabs. Columns and shutters. APA treats overlaid forming panels as a jobsite product: the overlay is there so the sheet can strip and go back up. How many times that happens depends on film weight, edge paint, and how the crew treats the panel. This atlas will not invent a reuse number.

For commercial benefit framing on the same overlay sheet — release behaviour, reuse economics — the mill keeps an advantages of film faced plywood hub. That outline is not cloned here. For the job versus the sheet, use the formwork plywood guide. For pour math and overlay types, use the mill contractor guide linked at the end. Spec sheets live there. Origin and definitions live here.

How do I read a mill versus a film faced plywood supplier?

"Supplier" is a shopping word. It covers a mill that owns the press. It also covers a trader who papers someone else's container, and a mill that also signs the export invoice. Those are not the same risk.

Ask who owns the film line. Then ask who will be on the packing list. A live floor walk and date-stamped sheets on the press are cheap tests. Certificates whose holder does not match the contract are not.

Origin follows the plant. The legal name on the invoice should match the mill test report and the packing list. A trading desk can still be the exporter of record. It cannot mint a mill name after the doors have closed.

I have opened offer packs that said "Vietnam film faced plywood factory" on page one and listed another legal entity on the mill certificate. I stopped reading the freight clause.

None of those rows is a vendor list. They are a reading method. If two names disagree, the origin claim is still unproven. The longer factory walk sits in the mill-qualification guide.

Vietnam Plywood Atlas on vietnamplywood.com is written by Vinawood, a Vietnam plywood mill founded in 1992 that exports to 55+ countries at about 5,000 containers a year. The mill's official North American distribution partner operates separately; there is no common ownership to disclose. The mill RFQ checklist sits on Vinawood's manufacturer page, not here.

What does the US hardwood CVD file actually say?

Do not treat "Vietnam formwork is duty-free" as a fact. Commerce published a final countervailing-duty determination on hardwood and decorative plywood from Vietnam on 21 July 2026 (91 FR 45770). Hardwood and decorative plywood are in scope. A phenolic film coating, by itself, does not pull a panel out of that file.

The same notice names an exclusion for Phenolic Film Faced Plyform (PFF). The published definition requires an APA Exterior or Exposure 1 bond, an opaque phenolic film on both faces at or above the stated film-weight threshold, and an opaque moisture-resistant edge coat. Structural plywood stamped to named PS 1 or PS 2 standards is a separate exclusion. A broker matches the SKU to that language. This page will not invent a duty rate.

For the live status map, see US AD/CVD Vietnam plywood status. Do not link MatteFace to that file.

Frequently asked

What is the Vietnam Plywood Atlas?

The Vietnam Plywood Atlas is the educational guide series on vietnamplywood.com. Vinawood authors it with a transparent mill affiliation. The mill's official North American distribution partner operates separately; there is no common ownership. Guides define origin, overlays, and buying language — not a storefront or SKU catalog.

What is Vietnam film faced plywood?

Plywood pressed in Vietnam with a resin-impregnated film (phenolic paper film) on one or both faces, usually on plantation-grown cores for concrete formwork / shuttering (walls, slabs, columns). Origin follows the plant that pressed the sheet, not the letterhead on the offer.

What is film faced plywood?

Plywood with a resin-impregnated film (phenolic paper film) pressed onto one or both faces. The use is concrete formwork / shuttering — walls, slabs, and columns. Crews pour against that film and strip it. Vietnam-origin film faced plywood is that construction on plantation-grown cores.

Is film faced plywood the same as shuttering plywood?

In trade, yes for concrete formwork overlay sheets: film faced, shuttering, and formwork plywood often name the same phenolic-film panel crews pour against. Still write the bond class and the origin (who pressed it) on the purchase order. Softwood shuttering without a film face is a different sheet.

What is phenolic plywood?

In trade it usually means plywood with a phenolic (phenol-formaldehyde) film face, i.e. film-faced formwork plywood. It can also mean a phenolic glue line with no film. Name the layer so you do not mix them.

Is phenolic plywood the same as film-faced?

Often, when the seller means a phenolic film overlay. Not always. A panel can have a phenolic (WBP) glue line and no film at all. Ask which layer they mean, then write the bond class on the purchase order.

Is a phenolic glue line the same as a phenolic film face?

No. A phenolic glue line is phenol-formaldehyde adhesive between veneers (WBP / EN 314-2 Class 3). A phenolic film face is the overlay crews pour against. One panel can have both. Some have only the glue.

Is film-faced plywood waterproof?

No. A WBP (weather and boil proof) glue line is water-resistant. EN 314-2 Class 3 is the exterior boil test. Unsealed edges still take water, so treat the panel as water-resistant, not waterproof.

How do I tell a mill from a film faced plywood supplier?

Match the invoice legal name to the mill test report and the packing list. A mill can show a live peel, press, and film line. A trader papers a container someone else pressed. If those names diverge, the origin claim is still unproven.

Is Vietnam film-faced formwork outside US hardwood CVD?

Not automatically. Commerce's 21 July 2026 final CVD notice (91 FR 45770) keeps hardwood and decorative plywood in scope even with a phenolic film coating. It does exclude a defined Phenolic Film Faced Plyform (PFF) product that meets the published bond, two-face film, and edge-coat tests. A broker matches the SKU to that language.

Is Consply or MDO the same as film-faced?

No. Consply is a commercial Bintangor face, not film-faced. MDO is a search term for a matte forming face; the named product is MatteFace Plywood (MTF). A melamine face film is also not phenolic film-faced formwork. P-Form is polypropylene, not Pro Form.
