Importers who read Vietnam mill test certificates meet EN 314-2 as a bond-class claim on the glue line. Spec writers meet it when EN 636, Eurocode 5 service class, marine rules, or exterior formwork language all point at the same moisture envelope. Write the class number. Do not accept “WBP” or “exterior glue” alone as a substitute.

Class numbers are exposure envelopes, not a marketing ladder. A Class 3 bond is required where the glue line must survive repeated wetting and redrying or long weather exposure. A Class 2 bond is the correct answer for protected humid service. Over-specifying Class 3 when Class 2 fits the job is a cost choice, not a standards requirement.

EN 314-1 tests vs EN 314-2 requirements

EN 314 splits the job into two documents. EN 314-1 defines how laboratories prepare specimens and run the bond-quality tests (immersion and boil pre-treatments, then shear). EN 314-2 states which results belong to which bonding class for end use. Specifiers ask for the class. Labs report results against the Part 1 methods.

APA Europe’s public table of EN 314-2 Section 4 pre-treatments shows why Class 2 and Class 3 are not the same boil story. Class 2 includes a 24-hour cold soak and a six-hour boil with cool-down before shear. Class 3 adds a boil–dry–boil cycle and a 72-hour boil path. Those steps sit on the certificate as method references, not as shear numbers you invent in an RFQ email. Trade shorthand still says “WBP” for weather-and-boil-proof. In European construction language, that claim only clears when the report names Bond Class 3 (or the matching EN 636 exterior type with durable veneers). A seller who answers “yes, WBP” without a class number has not answered the EN 314-2 question. I treat that answer as incomplete until the class number is on the report.

EN 636 declares the plywood type for dry, humid, or exterior conditions. It needs a bond class that matches or exceeds that condition. You cannot claim EN 636 Class 3 performance on a Class 2 glue line. APA Europe also notes a common trap: a 100% exterior-capable glue line on non-durable veneers may still land as EN 636-2 (humid) rather than EN 636-3 (exterior). Exterior type needs both the bond and veneer durability at the exterior level, or durability enhancement to that level. Glue alone does not finish the EN 636-3 story.

Eurocode 5 service classes assign design moisture assumptions for timber structures. They sit beside EN 314-2, not inside it. Spec writers who mix “Service Class 3” language with a Class 2 bond create a paper conflict. Align the three columns before you award the PO. Bond class vs species durability vs face grade

Three labels get collapsed into one sentence on offer sheets. Keep them apart.

  • EN 314-2 bonding class is glue-line performance after stated moisture pre-treatments.
  • EN 350 species durability ranks the wood’s natural resistance to biological attack. It does not replace bond class. Softwood or low-durability hardwood cores can carry a Class 3 glue line and still need protection, coatings, or durability enhancement for exterior biological risk.
  • Face grade (EN 635 appearance, or mill face codes) describes visible veneer quality. A clean face can sit on a Class 1 interior bond. A utility face can sit on a Class 3 exterior bond. Appearance does not prove moisture service.

Film overlays add a fourth confusion. A phenolic face film sheds concrete and rain at the surface. The core glue line still needs its own EN 314-2 class. Overlay chemistry and bond class are separate lines on a proper data sheet. Plantation-grown cores from Vietnam follow the same split. Origin names the press. Why Class 3 shows up in BS 1088 and exterior formwork specs

Marine and exterior product standards borrow EN 314-2 Class 3 because those jobs expect sustained wetting. BS 1088 marine plywood requires Bonding Class 3 under BS EN 314-2. A merchant label that only says “marine grade” without the BS 1088 class and bond evidence is marketing language, not the standard.

Exterior concrete formwork and unprotected site exposure also push buyers toward Class 3 glue lines when panels will see repeated wet–dry cycles outdoors. On a purchase order, write the EN 314-2 class, the EN 636 type if CE/DoP language applies, and the product standard that triggered the demand (BS 1088, formwork exterior, or another named rule). Then match those strings to the mill test report and the packing list. Class 3 on the certificate is the glue answer. It still does not mean the panel itself is sealed against water, and it is not a durability certificate for the veneer species.
